A carver, a caner, a joiner, a finisher — the same four every time, which is why we can tell you exactly what happened to your frame and when. Six things are true of every one that leaves the workshop.

i. Solid timber, nothing elseBirch through the frame, the rails and the legs. No fiberboard core, no veneer, no filler under the finish.
ii. Every carving cut by handCrest, corner scrolls and cabriole legs are worked with a gouge. Nothing is molded and glued on.
iii. Every cane panel woven by handReal rattan, woven strand over strand and seated into a machined groove so it can be re-caned a lifetime from now.
iv. Limed by hand, layer by layerWash worked into the grain and rubbed back off the high points, so the carving keeps its shadows.
v. Corners blocked and bolted throughThe joinery is mechanical, not stapled. It is the reason the bed stays silent under weight.

Solid Birch

Close, even grain that takes carving cleanly and holds a screw for decades. Not a single panel of MDF or veneer in the frame.

Hand-Woven Cane

Real rattan, woven strand over strand into a birch frame. It lets light through, keeps the bed from crowding a room, and holds its tension for years.

Limed Wash

Brushed on in layers, then rubbed back by hand so the grain reads through. A warm, chalky pale that sits with white linen, oak floors and brass alike.

Each crest, shell and acanthus leaf is carved into solid birch by a person with a gouge. Nothing is molded resin glued on afterwards — which is why the shadows fall differently on every bed we ship.

Two — The Caning

Headboard, footboard and the curved returns are each caned individually, then seated into a grooved birch frame and pegged. Because the panels are framed rather than load-bearing, they stay taut instead of sagging.

Three — The Finish

Pale wash is worked into the grain, wiped off the high points and left in the carving — the way a hundred years of wax and dust would do it. It’s why the bed looks at home in a new build and an old farmhouse equally.

In the Making

From rough board to bedroom.

Nothing is waiting in a warehouse for you. Your frame starts as boards the week you order it and passes through the same four pairs of hands every time. Twelve weeks door to door — transit included, not twelve weeks and then a shipping wait.

Your frame is begun weeks 1–4

Timber is selected and the carving starts the week you order. You get photographs of your actual frame at the carving, the caning and the finish.

Caned and joined weeks 5–8

Six cane panels are woven by hand and seated into their grooves, then the rails, legs and corner blocks are bolted into one frame and checked square.

Limed, cured, crated weeks 9–12

The wash is worked in and rubbed back, the topcoat left to cure properly, then the frame is photographed, crated and sent. Week twelve, it is at your door.

Twelve weeks from the day you order — that figure is door to door, transit included, not twelve weeks in the shop plus a shipping wait afterwards. It takes that long because the bed is made from raw timber after you order it: boards selected and cut, crest and legs carved by hand, six cane panels woven and seated, then limed, rubbed back, sealed and left to cure properly. We would rather promise twelve weeks and be right than promise eight and disappoint you.
No. Solid slats (fourteen, or sixteen on the King) over two center rails carry the mattress directly, with legs down to the floor for support. Innerspring, hybrid or foam — all work. A 10–12″ mattress sits most handsomely against the footboard. The slats also lift straight out if you would rather use an adjustable base — no extra charge, but tell us when you order.
Yes, at no extra charge. The slats lift straight out, so the frame works purely as a surround and an adjustable base sits inside it. Tempur-Pedic, Sleep Number and the rest all work this way. We do need to know before we start building, because we make the frame slightly longer so the base fits properly and the carved corners keep their curve rather than being squared off. Once your frame is under way we cannot change it, so tell us when you order or write to hello@meravelle.com the same day. You can have the slats in the crate or leave them out, whichever you prefer.
Solid birch through the frame, rails and legs. No MDF, no particleboard, no printed veneer anywhere in the bed. The cane is real rattan, woven by hand — not a pressed sheet stapled behind a lip.
The joints are bolted through corner blocks and the center rails carry feet to the floor, which is where most beds develop their noise. In five years of shipping this frame, creaking has never been a warranty claim.
The panels are framed rather than load-bearing, so nothing leans on them in normal use. Cats generally ignore vertical cane. A dog that jumps against a headboard is the one risk — and a panel can be re-caned by any furniture restorer if it ever needs it.
Time and hands. You are paying for a carver to cut a crest that no press could produce, a caner to weave six panels strand over strand, a joiner to block and bolt the corners, and a finisher to leave the wash alone long enough to cure. There is no faster way to make this bed without making a different bed.
Yes. We photograph your frame at carving, at caning and at finishing, and send them to you. Most owners tell us this is the part they did not expect to enjoy.
You have 100 nights to decide, which is long enough to live with it through a change of season and a few changes of bedding. If it is not right, tell us and we will arrange collection and refund you.
Tell us straight away, with a photograph. Anything that is not right is our problem, not yours — we repair or replace it. Each frame is inspected and photographed before it is crated, so we know exactly how yours left the workshop.
